We will be exploring underwater caves, vents, and dark depths of the Open Ocean. You are about to recieve some wild facts about the Ocean Biome. For example, did you know that the Open Ocean is the largest biome? I didn't. If you want adventure and excietment the Open Ocean is the place to be!


Open Oceans are located everywhere around the world boardering the continents. The names of the 5 oceans are the Indian, Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. The Indian Ocean Boarders Africa, India, and Astralia. The Pacific Ocean boarders a majority of the continents such as North and South America. The Artic Ocean is located in the northern part of the Northern Hemisphere. The Atlantic Ocean is located in the southern part of the Southern Hemisphere. Finally the Southern Ocean is located by Antarctica.

The yellow around the continents is the intertidal zone. The yellow "islands" are not islands at all, but in fact deep sea zones which are scarce.

Some of you may not have known, the ocean has four different zones, kind of like in a Tropical Rain Forest or in our atmospere. Intertidal Zone is the top layer, followed by the Pelagic Zone, folowed by the Benthic Zone, and concluded by the Abyssal Zone. Each zone has it's unique characteristics. Let's begin with the Intertidal Zone.

The Intertidal Zone has a high oxygen level. Usually in this layer it is around or even fairly warmer than 5 degrees C ( Although take note that this number can change based on how close or far the ocean is from the equater, this goes for all the layers). If the ocean is near the equater this number will go up, if the ocean is closer to the poles then most likely this number will go down ( With the exception of the current(s) passing through the ocean at the time).

Next we have the Pelagic Zone, which is below the Intertidal Zone.This zone has low oxygen content and temperatures around 5 degrees C.

After the Pelagic Zone we have the deep Benthic Zone. Considering that this zone doesn't get to much sunlight
, that it's oxygen content isn't so
great either not to mention the temperature is around 4 degrees C.

Finally the moment you have all been waiting for, put your hands together for the deepest zone, the Abyssal Zone. Ah yes, the Abyssal Zone, high oxygen content, temperatures around 3 degrees C, yup, nothing like it. Now that I have taught you about the four main layers of the ocean, it is time I tell you about Thermocline (A.K.A. Metalimnion).

Thermocline is a thin layer just below the water's surface ( It is the middle layer in the diagram above, the middle layer represents the Pelagic Zone and the Benithic Zone). As the diagram above shows, thermocline is an incline that connects the upper layer (one constant temperature) to the bottem layer ( another constant temperature). Thermocline changes differently in the summers and winters (as shown by the diagram). Thermocline is like steps on a stair case. You go from one floor to another by the one thing that connects them, stairs ( in this case thermocline would be the stairs).
